Why Most Youth Baseball Drills Fail
Here's a scene every youth coach has lived through: you set up a drill, explain it carefully, and within three minutes half the team is poking each other, staring at airplanes, or asking when they get to bat. Sound about right?
The problem isn't the kids — it's the drill. Most traditional baseball drills were designed for older, more focused players. They involve too much standing around, too little action, and zero excitement. Youth players need drills that are fast-paced, competitive, and game-like.
Here are 10 drills that actually work with real kids on real fields. Every one of them has been tested by parent-coaches just like you.
1. Rapid Fire Ground Balls
What it works: Fielding fundamentals, quick reactions
How it works: Line up 3–4 players across the infield. Hit a ground ball to each player in rapid succession — as soon as one fields and throws to first, you're hitting the next one. The pace keeps everyone locked in because their turn is always seconds away.
Why kids love it: It feels like a game. The speed creates excitement and the competitive element ("Who can field the most cleanly?") keeps them focused.
Age modifications: For 6U–8U, roll the ball instead of hitting it. For 10U+, increase the speed and add fielding to the backhand side.
2. The Knockout Throwing Game
What it works: Throwing accuracy
How it works: Set up a target (a bucket, a cone, or a strike zone drawn on a fence) at age-appropriate distance. Each player gets three throws. If they miss all three, they're "out" for that round. Last player standing wins. Repeat with new distances.
Why kids love it: It's competitive and has clear stakes. Even kids who are "out" love watching and cheering for their friends.
Age modifications: 6U uses 20 feet. 8U uses 30 feet. 10U+ uses 45–60 feet. Adjust target size for difficulty.
3. Base Running Relay Races
What it works: Base running technique, speed
How it works: Split the team into two groups. One group lines up at home, the other at second base. On "Go," the first player from each group sprints the bases — home to second, and second to home. The team that gets all players through first wins.
Why kids love it: They get to run fast and compete. It's pure energy.
Age modifications: For younger kids, have them run just home to second. For older kids, make it a full trip around the bases and teach them to hit the inside of each bag.
4. Pickle (Rundown Drill)
What it works: Base running instincts, throwing, tagging
How it works: Set up two bases about 40 feet apart. One runner starts in the middle. Two fielders (one at each base) try to tag the runner. After a tag or safe call, rotate players. You can run multiple pickle stations simultaneously.
Why kids love it: This is the one drill kids will beg you to run. The chase element makes it feel like recess, but they're learning real baseball skills.
Age modifications: With younger kids, start with just two fielders. For older kids, add a third fielder and teach proper rundown technique (throw to the base you're running toward).
5. Tee Ball Home Run Derby
What it works: Hitting mechanics, bat path
How it works: Place a tee at home plate. Mark a "home run line" with cones at a reasonable distance (80–120 feet depending on age). Each player gets five swings. Any ball past the line is a "homer." Keep a running leaderboard throughout the season.
Why kids love it: Every kid wants to hit a home run. The tee removes the variable of pitch quality and lets them focus on crushing the ball.
Age modifications: Adjust the home run line distance. For 10U+, switch from a tee to soft toss or front toss.
6. Catch and Dive
What it works: Outfield catching, effort, body control
How it works: Players line up in the outfield. You throw or hit fly balls just out of their reach, forcing them to run hard and sometimes lay out for the catch. Have them throw back to a cutoff person after every catch.
Why kids love it: Diving for balls makes them feel like pros. The highlight-reel catches build confidence and create team moments everyone remembers.
Age modifications: For younger kids, use softer training balls and throw shorter distances. For older kids, hit actual fly balls and work on reading the ball off the bat.
7. Infield Situation Drill
What it works: Game awareness, decision making
How it works: Put a full infield on the field and runners on base. Call out the situation: "Runner on first, one out." Then hit a ground ball. The infield has to make the right play. After each ball, change the situation.
Why kids love it: It feels like a real game. They have to think, not just react, and there's a team element — everyone succeeds or fails together.
Age modifications: For 8U, start with simple situations (runner on first only). For 10U+, add complex scenarios like runners on first and third with less than two outs.
8. Soft Toss Hitting Stations
What it works: Bat speed, hand-eye coordination, swing mechanics
How it works: Set up 3–4 stations: tee work, soft toss from the side, front toss with wiffle balls, and a dry swing station with a mirror or partner for feedback. Players rotate every 5 minutes.
Why kids love it: Stations keep them moving and give everyone tons of reps. Nobody stands around waiting for their turn to hit.
Age modifications: 6U–8U focuses on tee and light soft toss. 10U+ adds front toss and works on hitting specific pitch locations.
9. Relay Race Throw
What it works: Throwing mechanics, accuracy under pressure
How it works: Split the team into two lines, spaced 60 feet apart. The ball starts at one end. Players throw to the next person in line. The team that gets the ball from start to finish first — with no drops — wins. A drop means you start over from the beginning.
Why kids love it: The pressure of the relay creates urgency, and the restart rule teaches that accuracy matters more than arm strength.
Age modifications: Shorter distances for younger groups. Add a "must use proper crow hop" rule for older players.
10. Wiffle Ball Scrimmage
What it works: Everything — hitting, fielding, base running, game sense
How it works: Play a wiffle ball game on a shortened diamond. Use wiffle balls and either wiffle bats or regular bats. Modified rules: no walks (if ball four is called, tee goes out), everyone bats each inning, and ghost runners are allowed.
Why kids love it: It's an actual game. Wiffle balls curve like crazy, creating laughter and excitement. Lower speeds mean less fear at the plate for nervous hitters.
Age modifications: Works for all ages. Adjust field size and pitching distance accordingly.
Making Drills Work: Three Golden Rules
No matter which drills you choose, keep these principles in mind:
- Minimize standing time. If a player is waiting more than 60 seconds for their turn, your drill needs more stations or fewer players per group.
- Add competition to everything. Points, countdowns, and leaderboards transform boring reps into exciting challenges.
- Rotate frequently. No drill should last more than 10–12 minutes, even if it's going well. Switch it up before boredom creeps in.
