How to Run This Drill
  1. 1
Runner starts on second or third base.
  2. 2
Coach hits or throws a fly ball to the outfield.
  3. 3
Runner returns to the base and watches the catch — the instant the ball hits the glove, they push off and sprint.
  4. 4
Runner on third tags and goes home. Runner on second tags and goes to third.
  5. 5
5 reps from each base. Add a throw from the outfielder to test the runner's speed.
Equipment Needed
  • Bases
  • Baseballs
  • Gloves
  • Bat (for fungo)
Coaching Tips
  • Left foot on the base, right foot ready to push. Explode on the catch.
  • Watch the outfielder's body language — if they're camping under it, get ready to tag.
  • Young players often leave too early or too late. This drill fixes both.
