How to Run This Drill
  1. 1
    Shortstop and second baseman set up at their positions with a first baseman.
  2. 2
    Coach hits a ground ball to one side. That player fields and throws to second.
  3. 3
    The player covering second receives, touches the bag, and throws to first.
  4. 4
    Shortstop drill: catch, drag foot across bag, throw to first.
  5. 5
    Second baseman drill: catch, tag inside of bag with right foot, step and throw.
  6. 6
    8 double plays each direction.
Equipment Needed
  • Baseballs
  • Gloves
  • Bat (for fungo)
  • Bases
Coaching Tips
  • Safety first — teach them to get out of the way of the sliding runner.
  • Quick feet are everything. The throw doesn't have to be hard, just accurate and fast.
  • Shortstop: cheat toward second when you know a DP is in order.
