One-Hand Hitting Drill

Hitters take swings using only their top hand or bottom hand to isolate and strengthen each arm's role in the swing.

How to Run This Drill
  1. 1
    Set up a batting tee at waist height.
  2. 2
    Round 1: Bottom hand only — 10 swings focusing on leading with the knob of the bat.
  3. 3
    Round 2: Top hand only — 10 swings focusing on extension through the ball.
  4. 4
    Round 3: Both hands — 10 swings putting it together.
  5. 5
    Use a lighter bat or training bat for the one-hand rounds.
Equipment Needed
  • Batting tee
  • Baseballs
  • Bat (lighter preferred)
  • Net or fence
Coaching Tips
  • Bottom hand leads the swing — it controls bat path and directs the barrel.
  • Top hand provides power and extension through the zone.
  • If they struggle one-handed, choke way up or use a broomstick with wiffle balls.
