Front Toss / Flip Drill

Coach flips balls underhand from behind an L-screen directly in front of the hitter. Builds timing, barrel accuracy, and rhythm.

How to Run This Drill
  1. 1
    Coach sets up behind an L-screen about 15-18 feet in front of the batter.
  2. 2
    Flip the ball underhand at a consistent speed and location.
  3. 3
    Hitter takes full swings, driving the ball into a net or open field.
  4. 4
    Round 1: 10 pitches down the middle.
  5. 5
    Round 2: 10 pitches mixing inside and outside.
  6. 6
    Round 3: 5 pitches — hitter calls where they hit it before swinging.

  • Baseballs (bucket)
  • Bat
  • L-screen
  • Helmet
  • Net or open field
Coaching Tips
  • Front toss is the best drill for getting high-quality swings in a short time.
  • Keep the flip consistent — same speed, same arc every time.
  • Don't rush. Let the hitter reset between flips. Quality over quantity.
