Pitcher in the stretch position with a runner taking a lead at first.
  2. 2
Practice the spin move: quick step off the rubber with the back foot, pivot, and throw to first.
  3. 3
5 reps at half speed focusing on footwork.
  4. 4
5 reps at full speed trying to pick the runner off.
  5. 5
Mix in regular pitches to home so the runner can't time the move.

Coaching Tips
  • Must step off the rubber first or step toward first — otherwise it's a balk.
  • Quick feet matter more than arm speed. The throw doesn't need to be hard.
  • The best pick-off move looks like a pitch to home until the very last second.
