How to Run This Drill
  1. 1
Runners on first and third. Defense in full positions.
  2. 2
Runner on first breaks for second on the pitch.
  3. 3
Defense chooses a play: throw through to second, cut and throw home, fake to second and throw to third, or hold the ball.
  4. 4
Run 3-4 reps of each defensive option so players learn all responses.
  5. 5
Then go live — defense reads and reacts, offense tries to score.
Equipment Needed
  • Full field setup
  • Baseballs
  • Catcher's gear
  • Gloves
  • Helmets
Coaching Tips
  • Walk through each option slowly before going live.
  • The shortstop or second baseman is the 'cutoff' on the throw from the catcher — they decide to cut or let it go.
  • Teach the catcher to look the runner at third back before throwing.
